Songbird Preserve
Thank you to everyone who joined us for an enchanting walk along tree-lined, restored section of the Carmel River – and through some local history!
Conserved by Big Sur Land Trust in 2008, the Songbird Preserve provides habitat for a multitude of both native and migrating bird species, including 46 with special conservation status. Our stewardship team’s ongoing efforts include restoring and managing riparian habitat critical to species including California Red Legged Frogs and Steelhead Trout. A feature of Songbird Preserve is “ the Steinbeck Pool”. A large granite outcrop causes a deep pool to form in the river and is popularly-thought to have been a favorite supper spot for John Steinbeck. It is a great spot for a picnic as well!
