Join us for an enchanting walk along tree-lined, restored section of the Carmel River – and stroll through some local history!
Conserved by Big Sur Land Trust in 2008, the Songbird Preserve provides habitat for a multitude of both native and migrating bird species, including 46 with special conservation status. Our stewardship team’s ongoing efforts include restoring and managing riparian habitat critical to species including California Red Legged Frogs and Steelhead Trout. A feature of Songbird Preserve is “ the Steinbeck Pool”. A large granite outcrop causes a deep pool to form in the river and is popularly-thought to have been a favorite supper spot for John Steinbeck. It is a great spot for a picnic as well!
This leisurely half-day outing is a mild loop with frequent stops. It is about one level mile along tree-lined trails, shaded riparian single-track and sandy riverside embankments. Dress appropriately for the weather, wear layers and comfy hiking shoes for uneven terrain. Bring your favorite trail snack, picnic lunch, sun protection and ample water. No pets please.
