SUMMARY:Irrigation Line Sorting at Glen Deven Ranch
DESCRIPTION:We have recently removed a lot of irrigation lines from our restoration site at Glen Deven Ranch and need help sorting out the useable line and fittings! This involves removing fittings (emitter heads\, T-joints\, metal clamps\, etc. and sorting them) and then sorting out useable stretches of irrigation line itself. This will likely require cutting out the damaged sections of line and then sorting by thickness. The lines are currently in 2 piles at the property – 1 near the entrance gate and 1 near the property caretakers house in the driveway. \nSpace is limited so sign up today!

SUMMARY:CANCELLED | French Broom Removal | March 26
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \n\nFrench Broom Removal – Volunteer Event\nGlen Deven Ranch\nSaturday\, March 26 from 10:00AM-2:00PM \nJoin us at Glen Deven Ranch as we work to conserve the cultivated coastal grasslands of the property from the spread French Broom (Genista). \nFrench Broom is a fast spreading species which forms dense monocultures if left unmanaged. It can be devastating to the micro habitats of the Ranch\, especially the grasslands. Together with your help and the help of our partners we will be treating a large stand of French broom; ensuring that the population does not continue to spread across the Ranch. \nAt the event you will be helping us pull French Broom sprouts before they have a chance to grow and seed. You’ll also be hearing from our Project Manager Alex Kalish the effects of French Broom on the grasslands of the Central Coast. \n

SUMMARY:FULL | Restoration Planting Day | December 11
DESCRIPTION:FULL!\nGlen Deven Ranch\nSaturday\, December 11\, 2021\n10:00 AM – 3:00 PM \nBig Sur Land Trust has been slowly restoring 19-acres of Glen Deven Ranch following a massive Eucalyptus Removal Project which ended in 2019. Nearly half of the site has already revegetated but the challenging southern slope\, which is prone to landslides\, still remains an obstacle on the path to reestablishing native cover. Come be a part of the restoration and join in on planting and spreading native seed! \nYou will help us plant approximately 200 plants within the Eucalyptus Removal footprint to restore native vegetation cover and stabilize the eroding slope. Wear long a long sleeve shirt and close toed shoes. If you forget your gloves\, we have you covered! Snacks and water will be provided. \nThis event has passed. SUMMARY:Drill Seeding Rangeland Demonstration Day | November 17
DESCRIPTION:Free Field Demonstration \nWednesday\, November 17 from 9:00am – 12:30pm at Marks Ranch \nBig Sur Land Trust’s Marks Ranch has served as a grazing land for livestock for many years. However\, grazing operations were interrupted in 2016 with the Soberanes Fire and again in 2020 with the River Fire when\, throughout the duration of these wildfires\, the ranch served as the incident command center. The equipment and personnel activities on the staging area resulted in compacted soil and absence of vegetation covering. As part of the recovery efforts\, Big Sur Land Trust and the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation have implemented rangeland seeding on the impacted area. \nRangeland seeding is a practice that can restore degraded land while increasing healthy forage for livestock. It can also improve soil health\, re-establish native vegetation that increases habitat value\, create pollinator habitat\, improve water filtration\, increase carbon sequestration\, among many other benefits. Depending on your goals and your land structure\, drill seeding can be an effective method to implement during your seeding project. Drill seeders directly place seeds into the soil with minimal ground disturbance. The Truax seeder\, that will be used in the live demonstration of drill seeding\, can be calibrated to provide an even seeding rate of large\, small\, and fluffy seeds. \nJoin us in the field to learn more about drill seeding and alternative seeding methods. Watch a live demonstration of drill seeding at Marks Ranch. Gain an understanding of what factors to consider when implementing a rangeland seeding project and how to determine best seed mixtures. Learn how the Healthy Soils Program can help fund your rangeland seeding project. \nThis event has passed. Please stay tuned for more events like this one. \nFor more information\, download our flyer here and contact Jazmine Mejia-Muñoz at jazmine@californiamsf.org or call (661) 331-2612.

SUMMARY:Oak Tree Restoration for Rangelands
DESCRIPTION:Oak Tree Restoration for Rangelands \nAugust 25\, 2021 from 3:00pm – 4:30pm on Zoom \nOak woodlands perform numerous important ecosystem services including scenic beauty\, erosion prevention\, improving water quality and infiltration\, regulating water flow in watersheds\, providing habitat for bird and animal species\, increasing biodiversity\, and GHG sequestration as well as improving soil health. Oaks are healthy for rangelands for many of these same reasons\, plus they provide shade for grazing animals and increase soil water storage for a longer “green” period. The decrease in oaks has been attributed to many factors including overgrazing\, fire suppression\, excessive ground squirrel and gopher activity\, invasive species\, poor management practices and human development. The California Oak Foundation projects that over 1 million acres of woodland will be lost to development in the upcoming 30 years. Rangeland represents the best opportunity for oak restoration and together we can help regenerate vital oak woodlands\, but it’s not easy – so take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn from experts now! \nJoin us in a virtual tour of an oak tree restoration project in Monterey County. Learn what factors to consider when implementing an oak tree restoration project and how to determine if your location is appropriate for restoration. We will review lessons learned from two long term Oak Tree Restoration Projects in California. Learn how the the Healthy Soils Program can help fund your oak tree restoration project. \nThis event has passed. Please stay tuned for more events like this one. \nShare and download the flyer with those who may also be interested here. \nThis event is supported by the ‘California Climate Investments’ program.

SUMMARY:Big Sur Land Trust’s Virtual Book Club - Braiding Sweetgrass
DESCRIPTION:Join Big Sur Land Trust’s virtual book club! \n\n\n\nFor our next book\, we’ve chosen Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer\, a New York Times and Washington Post bestseller and named “Best Essay Collection of the Decade” by Literary Hub. Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist\, and as a woman\, Kimmerer shows how other living beings―asters and goldenrod\, strawberries and squash\, salamanders\, algae\, and sweetgrass―offer us gifts and lessons\, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today\, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth\, and learn to give our own gifts in return. Join our upcoming virtual book club event on November 12 from 4:30 – 6:00pm (PT)! \nAs we explore Braiding Sweetgrass\, we’ll be joined by featured contributor\, Linda Yamane and special guest speaker\, Carla Marie Munoz\, Tribal Councilwoman of the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe. Linda is an Ohlone artist\, basketweaver\, singer and scholar who traces her ancestry to the Rumsien Ohlone\, the native people of the Monterey area. Carla Marie has served as a tribal liaison for her people for the past nine years\, while creating relationships between state parks\, government agencies and other tribal communities. \nWe’re partnering with two independent community bookstores in the area. Drop by or call Pilgrim’s Way in Carmel or Downtown Book and Sound in Salinas to get your book. \n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP below to join our virtual meeting (by either calling-in or via Zoom) on November 12th from 4:30 – 6:00pm (PT) to discuss this inspiring story and hear representatives from local tribes give their perspectives: \n\nThis event has passed.
