SUMMARY:Oak Tree Restoration for Rangelands
DESCRIPTION:Oak Tree Restoration for Rangelands \nAugust 25\, 2021 from 3:00pm – 4:30pm on Zoom \nOak woodlands perform numerous important ecosystem services including scenic beauty\, erosion prevention\, improving water quality and infiltration\, regulating water flow in watersheds\, providing habitat for bird and animal species\, increasing biodiversity\, and GHG sequestration as well as improving soil health. Oaks are healthy for rangelands for many of these same reasons\, plus they provide shade for grazing animals and increase soil water storage for a longer “green” period. The decrease in oaks has been attributed to many factors including overgrazing\, fire suppression\, excessive ground squirrel and gopher activity\, invasive species\, poor management practices and human development. The California Oak Foundation projects that over 1 million acres of woodland will be lost to development in the upcoming 30 years. Rangeland represents the best opportunity for oak restoration and together we can help regenerate vital oak woodlands\, but it’s not easy – so take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn from experts now! \nJoin us in a virtual tour of an oak tree restoration project in Monterey County. Learn what factors to consider when implementing an oak tree restoration project and how to determine if your location is appropriate for restoration. We will review lessons learned from two long term Oak Tree Restoration Projects in California. Learn how the the Healthy Soils Program can help fund your oak tree restoration project. \nThis event has passed. Please stay tuned for more events like this one. \nShare and download the flyer with those who may also be interested here. \nThis event is supported by the ‘California Climate Investments’ program.

SUMMARY:An evening with Dr. Matthew Savoca | June 17
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, June 17\n5:30 – 6:30pm \nWe all know that plastic poses a threat to our environment and to animals. Join us for a virtual presentation from Dr. Matthew Savoca\, as he shares his findings on why marine animals mistake plastic for food. We’ll even learn about some cool new research that hasn’t yet been published! \nDr. Matthew Savoca is a postdoctoral researcher at the Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University. Matthew completed his PhD in Ecology at the University of California\, Davis\, where his research focused on why marine animals mistake plastic debris for prey items. This work received international media attention from NPR\, The BBC\, The New York Times\, and National Geographic\, among other outlets. He earned a Science and SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists in 2018 for an essay describing his doctoral work. He currently studies the foraging behavior of baleen whales and their possible interactions with microplastics. Matthew is also passionate about science communication and maintains an active science blog and writes for The Conversation. Several of these popular science articles have been republished by venues including the San Francisco Chronicle\, Scientific American\, and the Washington Post. SUMMARY:Big Sur Land Trust’s Virtual Book Club - Braiding Sweetgrass
DESCRIPTION:Join Big Sur Land Trust’s virtual book club! \n\n\n\nFor our next book\, we’ve chosen Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer\, a New York Times and Washington Post bestseller and named “Best Essay Collection of the Decade” by Literary Hub. Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist\, and as a woman\, Kimmerer shows how other living beings―asters and goldenrod\, strawberries and squash\, salamanders\, algae\, and sweetgrass―offer us gifts and lessons\, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today\, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world. For only when we can hear the languages of other beings will we be capable of understanding the generosity of the earth\, and learn to give our own gifts in return. Join our upcoming virtual book club event on November 12 from 4:30 – 6:00pm (PT)! \nAs we explore Braiding Sweetgrass\, we’ll be joined by featured contributor\, Linda Yamane and special guest speaker\, Carla Marie Munoz\, Tribal Councilwoman of the Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe. Linda is an Ohlone artist\, basketweaver\, singer and scholar who traces her ancestry to the Rumsien Ohlone\, the native people of the Monterey area. Carla Marie has served as a tribal liaison for her people for the past nine years\, while creating relationships between state parks\, government agencies and other tribal communities. \nWe’re partnering with two independent community bookstores in the area. Drop by or call Pilgrim’s Way in Carmel or Downtown Book and Sound in Salinas to get your book. \n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP below to join our virtual meeting (by either calling-in or via Zoom) on November 12th from 4:30 – 6:00pm (PT) to discuss this inspiring story and hear representatives from local tribes give their perspectives: \n\nThis event has passed. Throughout the years\, she learned to take care of herself\, forged an unbreakable bond with her grandfather and opened up to the wonder and wisdom of nature. \nWe are honored that Meredith May\, author of The Honey Bus\, will be joining us for our upcoming virtual book club event on July 23 from 4:00 – 6:00pm (PT)!  \n\n\n\nWe’re partnering with Pilgrim’s Way\, an independent community bookstore in Carmel. SUMMARY:Cancelled – Guided Hike at Marks Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled – Guided Hike at Marks Ranch March 14\, 2020 8:45 AM – 2:00 PM \n\n\n\nAfter considering several of the current public health messages we are receiving\, we have decided to postpone this guided hike at Marks Ranch.However\, Big Sur Land Trust believes it is more important than ever to connect people to open spaces so that they may experience the proven mental and physical health benefits of time spent in nature. We encourage you to visit http://bigsurlandtrust.org/hike-request/ and sign up for a self-guided hike on one of our spectacular conserved properties.Home of Benjamin and Nisene Marks\, who settled there in 1890\, the ranch was once a major egg production enterprise. Since acquiring the ranch in 2007\, Big Sur Land Trust has cared for its rolling hills\, woodlands\, meadows\, grazing lands and 90 species of wildflowers. Critical wildlife corridors remain protected as well. The hike is a moderately strenuous loop\, about 5 miles with 600 feet elevation gain at a leisurely pace. Dress appropriately for the weather\, wear layers and comfy hiking shoes for uneven terrain. Bring your favorite trail snack\, picnic lunch\, sun protection and ample water. No pets please. \n\nThis event has passed. Please stay tuned for more events like this one.

SUMMARY:FULL - Presentation: Midway Atoll Annual Albatross Nesting Census
DESCRIPTION:EVENT CLOSED \nCome join long-time Big Sur Land Trust supporter and volunteer\, Jan Loomis as she shares her recent experience on Midway Atoll with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Through humor\, story-telling and photos she will discuss the annual albatross nesting census and give an update on other current projects at Midway Atoll. While Jan’s main job on Midway was to census nesting birds\, Jan’s training as an observer and emergency responder would not allow her to ignore the slow-moving crises of climate change and plastic pollution that were impacting a large breeding colony of birds on one of the most remote islands on the planet. \nA light lunch will be provided. RSVP using the form below. \nAbout Jan Loomis \nIn December of 2018\, Jan Loomis went to Midway Atoll to have an adventure and be surrounded by the seabirds she had recently fallen in love with (thank you Makana). As a new member of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Annual Nesting Albatross Census Team\, she came to know all things Albatross. For nearly six weeks she lived and worked among the largest nesting colony of Laysan Albatross in the world. Jan loves to travel and the more remote and exotic\, the better! Her formal training/background has been a thirty-five-year career in emergency medicine (RN and paramedic)\, but her true love has always been marine biology – in particular shore and seabirds. \nShe currently works in the field of travel medicine – keeping everyday travelers\, marine biologists (including MBA and MBARI staff!)\, Peace Corps workers\, members of the Department of Defense\, foreign governments and Homeland Security from contracting diseases while away on foreign assignments and travel. Locally\, Jan is involved with two citizen-science projects that give ample opportunities for enjoying the Monterey Bay’s amazing wildlife while contributing to local conservation efforts. She recently completed her third year with the Central Coast Black Oystercatcher Monitoring Project and as a volunteer naturalist for the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary (NOAA). \nThis event has passed. The event will involve low strenuous activity\, and some hiking will be required. \nPlease wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring sun protection and water. Some of the collection sites may have exposure to poison oak so please wear long-sleeved clothing. We will provide tools and instruction. \nCarpooling is encouraged. Glen Deven Ranch is approximately 20 minutes south of Carmel. Directions will be provided with your confirmation email.
