SUMMARY:Carr Lake Park Site Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of our Carr Lake site in Salinas with Rachel Saunders\, Director of Conservation\, and Jennifer Vasquez\, Conservation Program Assistant\, who will share the vision for this new park in the heart of Salinas. We’ll be sharing the history of the property\, our goals for the park\, and how the community is engaged in the design process. You’ll walk through the native plant demonstration garden and see examples of our restoration plans. As we explain the benefits of restoring the floodplain\, you’ll learn about the relationship between the site and the larger watershed and the connection between Carr Lake and the ocean. And you’ll have plenty of time to ask questions!

SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity: Big Sur Redwood Forest Restoration at Glen Deven Ranch
DESCRIPTION:Join the Watershed Stewards Program and Big Sur Land Trust at Glen Deven Ranch in Big Sur\, where we will be restoring a redwood forest and enhancing steelhead trout habitat along Garrapata Creek! \nTasks will include removing invasive plant species to support native plants\, weeding around redwood seedlings\, improving habitat for wildlife\, including federally-listed threatened steelhead\, and transplanting native plants locally. The restoration work at Glen Deven Ranch is ambitious and exciting\, and it’s imperative that we remove invasive\, non-native species to encourage native plants and the pollinators who love them\, reduce erosion risk\, and bring back the natives. \nPlease bring closed-toed shoes (sturdy working/hiking boots are recommended)\, long pants\, lunch\, water bottle\, coffee mug\, and appropriate sun and rain protection. We will be working outside\, so be prepared to get dirty! \nAll ages are welcome\, but this event is recommended for volunteers 16 years of age and older. Water\, snacks\, and coffee will be provided\, but please bring a lunch. This event will happen rain or shine! Please register below:

SUMMARY:Glen Deven Ranch Native Seed Collection Day
DESCRIPTION:Glen Deven Ranch Native Seed Collection Day\nSaturday\, November 10 | 9:00am – 1:00pm \nWe have completed the eucalyptus removal effort at Glen Deven Ranch and are moving into the restoration phase of the project. This volunteer work day will be centered on native seed collection\, enabling us to create a native seed bank to be used for Glen Deven Ranch’s restoration. We plan to restore the newly-opened understory to high quality native chaparral habitat from local sources of seed. The event will involve low strenuous activity\, and some hiking will be required. \nPlease wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring sun protection and water. Some of the collection sites may have exposure to poison oak so please wear long-sleeved clothing. We will provide tools and instruction. \nCarpooling is encouraged. Glen Deven Ranch is approximately 20 minutes south of Carmel. Directions will be provided with your confirmation email. \nInterested in helping? Please fill out the form below.

SUMMARY:Arroyo Seco Hike
DESCRIPTION:October 16\, 2018 • 7:30AM – 1:00 PM\n\n  \nMeeting Location:\nWild Goose Café\n18 E Carmel Valley Rd. (12.32)\nCarmel Valley\, CA 93924\nMeet at 7:30 AM sharp. Arrive early if you want to indulge in a great cup of coffee and a pastry! We will caravan together to the ranch.\nCome and explore this remote 1\,675-acre ranch acquired by Big Sur Land Trust in 2007. Fronting the Arroyo Seco River\, the property was a conservation priority because of its diverse habitats\, native plant and animal species\, river and creek systems and links to surrounding wilderness areas. Learn more about our 5-mile hike and extended trip options. \n \nA moderately strenuous 5-mile round-trip hike will take you through the rich riparian habitat of Horse Canyon and sycamore alluvial woodlands. Be prepared for multiple creek crossings and rocky terrain. \nOn the extended (very strenuous!) option we will explore dense oak woodlands\, hike up to high country to take in panoramic views of the Arroyo Seco watershed\, and descend to cross (or swim in!) the Arroyo Seco River.
