SUMMARY:Caminata y Loteria de Observación de Aves | September 14
\nRSVP >>

SUMMARY:Birding with Monterey Audubon Society at Marks Ranch | December 2
DESCRIPTION:Big Sur Land Trust is thrilled to host Monterey Audubon Society field trips at Big Sur Land Trust Preserves. Monterey Audubon Society members and Big Sur Land Trust supporters are invited to this wonderful opportunity to explore the lands we love in a new way. \nThis event is appropriate for beginning birders and all those interested in learning how to better identify our local breeding birds. Thanks to Big Sur Land Trust’s partnership with Monterey Audubon Society\, we use eBird to monitor the bird populations on Big Sur Land Trust preserves. This field trip is an opportunity to contribute to this growing effort and all participants will have access to a list of birds seen during the day. \nRegister >>

SUMMARY:Healthy Soils at Marks Ranch Walk-and-Talk with Patrick Riparetti | November 4
DESCRIPTION:Come to Marks Ranch to learn about our Healthy Soils Program from BSLT’s Director of Stewardship\, Patrick Riparetti\, and project partners. \nDuring the Soberanes Fire in 2016 and most recently with the River Fire\, Marks Ranch served as part of the incident command center. The land was impacted significantly by equipment and personnel. In our recovery efforts\, Big Sur Land Trust (BSLT) partnered with the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation (CMSF) to initiate a three-year Healthy Soils Program project at Marks Ranch.Recognizing that the health of the Marine Sanctuary is tied directly to the health of the land\, the Healthy Soils Program helps working ranches and farmlands improve soil health and promote its ability to sequester carbon that cause ocean acidification and warming. With the Marks Ranch Healthy Soils Project now entering its third and final year\, project members from BSLT and CMSF will share how this area is recovering from the 2020 River Fire and what we have learned so far. Participants can expect a gentle and relaxed walk on the land and talk about the research at Marks Ranch that is furthering our understanding of soil restoration. \nThis event will have a mix of walking and talking. Participants are welcome to hike independently upon the conclusion of the event. \nRegister here >>

SUMMARY:Volunteer: Thistle Pull at Marks Ranch | May 3
DESCRIPTION:Introduced invasive thistle species can outcompete native plants and take over large areas\, creating dense monocultures if left unmanaged. In addition\, invasive thistles\, such as Italian thistle\, can form physical barriers that inhibit livestock and wildlife from entering an area\, and their height can increase the risk of severe wildfire by creating readily available ladder fuels. \nVolunteers will use hand tools to remove as many Italian thistle sprouts as possible along the main road to the Hacienda. \nRegister >> \n

SUMMARY:Drill Seeding Rangeland Demonstration Day | November 17
DESCRIPTION:Free Field Demonstration \nWednesday\, November 17 from 9:00am – 12:30pm at Marks Ranch \nBig Sur Land Trust’s Marks Ranch has served as a grazing land for livestock for many years. However\, grazing operations were interrupted in 2016 with the Soberanes Fire and again in 2020 with the River Fire when\, throughout the duration of these wildfires\, the ranch served as the incident command center. The equipment and personnel activities on the staging area resulted in compacted soil and absence of vegetation covering. As part of the recovery efforts\, Big Sur Land Trust and the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation have implemented rangeland seeding on the impacted area. \nRangeland seeding is a practice that can restore degraded land while increasing healthy forage for livestock. It can also improve soil health\, re-establish native vegetation that increases habitat value\, create pollinator habitat\, improve water filtration\, increase carbon sequestration\, among many other benefits. Depending on your goals and your land structure\, drill seeding can be an effective method to implement during your seeding project. Drill seeders directly place seeds into the soil with minimal ground disturbance. The Truax seeder\, that will be used in the live demonstration of drill seeding\, can be calibrated to provide an even seeding rate of large\, small\, and fluffy seeds. \nJoin us in the field to learn more about drill seeding and alternative seeding methods. Watch a live demonstration of drill seeding at Marks Ranch. Gain an understanding of what factors to consider when implementing a rangeland seeding project and how to determine best seed mixtures. Learn how the Healthy Soils Program can help fund your rangeland seeding project. \nThis event has passed. Please stay tuned for more events like this one. \nFor more information\, download our flyer here and contact Jazmine Mejia-Muñoz at jazmine@californiamsf.org or call (661) 331-2612.

DESCRIPTION:Cancelled – Guided Hike at Marks Ranch March 14\, 2020 8:45 AM – 2:00 PM \n\n\n\nAfter considering several of the current public health messages we are receiving\, we have decided to postpone this guided hike at Marks Ranch.However\, Big Sur Land Trust believes it is more important than ever to connect people to open spaces so that they may experience the proven mental and physical health benefits of time spent in nature. We encourage you to visit http://bigsurlandtrust.org/hike-request/ and sign up for a self-guided hike on one of our spectacular conserved properties.Home of Benjamin and Nisene Marks\, who settled there in 1890\, the ranch was once a major egg production enterprise. Since acquiring the ranch in 2007\, Big Sur Land Trust has cared for its rolling hills\, woodlands\, meadows\, grazing lands and 90 species of wildflowers. Critical wildlife corridors remain protected as well. The hike is a moderately strenuous loop\, about 5 miles with 600 feet elevation gain at a leisurely pace. Dress appropriately for the weather\, wear layers and comfy hiking shoes for uneven terrain. Bring your favorite trail snack\, picnic lunch\, sun protection and ample water. No pets please. \n\nThis event has passed. Please stay tuned for more events like this one.
