ENewsletter — October 8 | Learning, Connecting, and Caring for the People Who Care for the Land

Members of the Big Sur Land Trust team and Board at this year’s Rally in Denver, CO.

Dear Friend,

Last month, members of the Big Sur Land Trust team and Board joined more than 2,200 conservation colleagues from across the country at the Land Trust Alliance Rally in Denver. It was an opportunity to learn from our peers, explore new approaches and technologies, and spend valuable time together as a team.

At BSLT, Healthy People is one of our top strategic priorities. That means connecting our community with the benefits of land and nature, but it also means investing in our own people — giving our team opportunities to learn, build relationships, recharge, and bring fresh thinking and experience back to our work.

One theme I heard repeatedly at Rally was connectivity. We saw inspiring examples of connecting landscapes, including the Greenland Wildlife Overpass, where conservation organizations, agencies, landowners, and communities came together to reconnect critical wildlife habitat. We also explored how land trusts are strengthening connections between people and place through accessible trails, Indigenous leadership and Tribal engagement, education, and cultural access.

Other important themes included using new technology and GIS tools, listening more intentionally to communities, telling stronger stories, developing sustainable funding, retaining talented staff, and building resilient organizations that can navigate change.

I came home energized by what others are doing, and grateful that BSLT makes learning and connecting a priority. Healthy lands need healthy, connected communities. And both depend on healthy, curious, and connected people doing the work.
