Basin Ranch — Carmel Valley

Big Sur Land Trust’s Basin Ranch is a 5,105-acre nature preserve within a critical wildlife corridor in Carmel Valley’s Sierra de Salinas mountain range near Arroyo Seco and Greenfield.

Our acquisition in November 2023 prevented potential development, protecting important habitats that many animals depend on. Wildlife cameras on the property have documented threatened species like mountain lions and American badgers, and other animals including gray foxes, golden eagles, and great horned owls. Restoration of oak woodlands, annual and perennial grasslands, and seasonal creeks and streams will revitalize the lands and waterways that these species need to survive.

Big Sur Land Trust is currently working with the Esselen Tribe of Monterey County on a co-management agreement to partner with the Tribe to help conserve and enhance the natural and cultural resources of Basin Ranch.
