A Tribute to Butch Kronlund

Big Sur Land Trust honors the passing of a longtime partner and friend, Butch Kronlund. He was a trusted advisor on land use issues and community concerns. As the head of Coast Property Owners Association of Big Sur (later becoming Community Association of Big Sur), he was a champion of the rural Big Sur community and always protected the concerns of his fellow property owners along the coast. He was a visionary and deeply caring person who had a deep respect for the community and natural resources of Big Sur.
Butch was a driving force behind the Big Sur Pledge in 2019 to encourage visitors to respect the land like a local. He also helped draft the Big Sur’s Destination Stewardship Plan in 2020 to help manage the ongoing rise in tourism. Butch held a shared vision of environmental health and economic prosperity, seeing the potential to balance the experience of visitors with the quality of life of locals. He held the mindset that actively doing something was the only option and consistently saw the opportunities to communicate these ideas in a positive way. Butch will be greatly missed.
