Discover “land snorkeling” on the lands you love in Monterey County!
We know it’s summer and your first thought might be to jump into the ocean, BUT have you ever heard of land snorkeling? It’s the art of slowing down while you hike and letting the landscape reveal its quiet magic—like how you hover over a reef while snorkeling but with your feet firmly on dry ground.

At Basin Ranch in Carmel Valley, we practiced this mindful way of exploring, tuning into the colors, textures, and rhythms of the land. From sweeping views to the intricate beauty of native blooms—like cobweb thistle, queen poppy, Chinese houses, and clarkia—each moment reminding us why we protect places like this. Give land snorkeling a try this summer at one of Big Sur Land Trust’s preserves.

Iceplant Removal at Martin Dunes in Marina
Big Sur Land Trust’s preserve at Martin Dunes protects critical habitat for several special status species, including the Monterey spineflower, Smith’s blue butterfly, and Western snowy plover. However, introduced invasive species such as iceplant and annual grasses are widespread threats to this native coastal dune system. Join us in ensuring the native plants and animals have the best chance for success!
