Race for Open Space 2021
April 4 – 25
Offering unique trail options to run and hike
No matter your fitness level or where you live, Big Sur Land Trust’s Race for Open Spacehas something for everyone! You can sign up to run/hike at BSLT’s Mitteldorf Preserve in Carmel Valley or Glen Deven Ranch in Big Sur. Or if you live out of the area, you can participate on your favorite local trails.
Thanks to our partners at Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District (MPRPD),California State Parks, Santa Lucia Preserve and Santa Lucia Conservancy, experienced trail runners can choose Adventure Courses on conserved lands that are not usually publicly accessible! Both courses begin at Palo Corona Regional Park, which includes lands originally conserved by Big Sur Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy, the State of California and MPRPD before the property was transferred to MPRPD.
The nine-mile Canyon and Creek Course travels through Palo Corona’s back country and offers a rare sneak peek at the San Jose Creek Trail, which has not yet been opened to the public. San Jose Creek Trail is the first interconnected trail of the Lobos-Corona Parklands Project, a collaborative effort between Big Sur Land Trust, California State Parks, MPRPD, and the Point Lobos Foundation.
The 21-mile Adventure Across Lands Course is not for the faint of heart! Boasting 4,250+ feet of elevational gain with steep ascents and descents, the course passes through Palo Corona’s back country and then crosses onto the protected Wildlands of the Santa Lucia Preserve before entering Mitteldorf Preserve. After completing the Nature Loop Trail, runners will return back to Palo Corona.
