Upcoming Opportunities to Experience the Lands You Love

A Reflection of My Time on the Board of Trustees

Judy Sulsona recently finished her long tenure on our Board of Trustees. Her contributions are immeasurable and have helped shape our engagement with communities throughout Monterey County. Recently, she shared a look back at her time as a trustee. We are forever grateful for you, Judy!

I had the honor of serving on the Board of Trustees of Big Sur Land Trust (BSLT) during a time of deep, thoughtful reflection and well-planned evolution that redefined the direction of the organization and its relationship with our communities.

By mid-2000, land trusts across the country had begun to explore how the traditional mission of land trusts and conservation organizations would remain relevant in light of the demographic and socio-economic changes they were seeing in the communities where they worked. Big Sur Land Trust decided to participate in that conversation early on. What we learned inspired us to expand our mission and vision, engage in new partnerships and with new communities, and restructure the organization. During this time, we also hired a new CEO. The plans for mission expansion informed and drove the criteria.

We attracted Jeannette Tuitele-Lewis, a national conservation leader with the rare balance of visionary leadership and practical management competence. Our loyal and dedicated staff unleashed their creativity and enthusiasm to work with youth, partners and families that were new to our experience as an organization, while continuing to work diligently to fulfill our land stewardship responsibilities. An example of that creativity is the unique approach of our youth camps. Our camps are exceptional in enabling youth to experience the land as a place for healing and to connect with that part of themselves that is often neglected, the part that responds to beauty. Our camps are realizing the promise of building a new generation of leaders and conservation advocates.

This is an exciting and promising time for Big Sur Land Trust. The organization has a strong foundation upon which to build, including a respected history, the experience of innovative organizational change that will help the Land Trust face and adapt to challenges in the future, the trust of our partners, and a national reputation for innovation and courageous leadership.

As I complete my tenure on the Board of Trustees, I sincerely thank board members, staff, donors, supporters, and our partners for allowing me to be part of a journey that few organizations have the courage and patience to undertake at the pace necessary for the changes to be meaningful and lasting.
